Connections - Fate

"God has given us, in a measure, the power to make our own fate; and when our energies seem to demand a sustenance they cannot get - when our will strains after a path we may not follow - we need neither starve from inanition, nor stand still in despair: we have but to seek another nourishment for the mind, as strong as the forbidden food it longed to taste - and perhaps suer; and to hew out the adventurous foot a road as direct and broad as the one Fortune has blocked up against us, if rougher than it," (Bronte 367).

I am not religious in any way, shape, or form, however I do believe in the art and philosophy of making my own fate. So, this is my connection to real life. St. John is correct when he says we are "given...the power to make our own fate" but he says we have limits. We have no limits, when it comes to reality. I guess it depends on how you would like to look at it. But in terms of science, I believe we have nothing that can stop us from living life to the fullest without some sort of afterlife motivation. Society has concocted this vision that if you are good to people you are rewarded with everything you ever wanted on a fluffy cloud. I have no problem with believing in the afterlife, but people should be good and beautiful without the motivation of greed and reward, it's the most unholy way of life and irks me. Moral of the story, be a good person while you are here, because yolo. Yes I said yolo.
