Characterization - Stand Against Bullying, Kids.

"He bullied me and punished me; not two or three times in the week, nor once or twice in the day, but continually; every nerve I had feared him, and every morsel of flesh on my bones shrank when he came near," (Bronte 9).

This quote from the selected literature is pretty self explanatory: Jane was traumatized as a child by her cousin John Reed. This easily explains her character, after all she is the one and only Jane Eyre. Just think about the story, and the facts: Jane's character throughout the story is against the grain, and all about being a strong independent woman. In the most literal sense, none of the other female roles in the story have the ambition or desire to be independent. All the abuse she experienced explains why she longs to be isolated and her own person. Yes, Jane may be scared of the beastly John Reed, but these terrible events in her life caused her to be strong and independent.
